A Reference For Life:

Fraser Valley based British Columbia Institute of Holistic Studies is pleased to announce the fifth edition publication of The Essential Oil Reference Book by the school's Chief Instructor, Doug Thomson. The new edition is to be available online and in PDF formats, making aromatherapy usage and essential oil safety accessible to just about everyone. The Essential Oil Reference Book is arguably the most objective and comprehensive compilation on therapeutic essential oils written anywhere. The book comes with new material on Ravensara and Blood Orange, essential oil updates and numerous case studies.

Changes in Terminology:

There are many in the public and in "traditional" medicine who scoff at the use of the descriptive terms alternative and complementary when referring to therapies practiced by non-professionals involved in health care. These terms cause a perception of separation in the mind of the professional and public so that recognition of the modality as a preventative health care practice becomes difficult and opens the therapies and practitioners to ridicule.

The new term 'Integrated Therapy' (ies) is in use by a number of physicians and this Institute believes it would be in the best interests of 'complementary and alternative therapists' to use the term 'Integrated Therapies' when referring to therapies such as aromatherapy and reflexology. After all terminology can make a huge difference in acceptance of a therapeutic modality.

It is recommended that the terms complementary and alternative be discarded by all who wish to see acceptance of their therapeutic modality some time in the future.

Spring Courses - Time to Investigate Your Future

Now is the time BCIHS looks forward to enrolling new students for the spring 2007 semester. Preparations are under way to prepare for students who wish to take individual courses such as aromatherapy, reflexology, product knowledge, spa, and Reiki, which make up part of the 9 course 5 month Holistic Practitioner Course, or who want to take the complete packaged program.

Professionalism

Aromatherapists: The training you have taken, regardless of school or teacher, can only be as accurate as the information available at the time you took your training. You have a professional responsibility to study the latest information, scientific and otherwise, to keep yourself as educated in your profession as possible. Take continuing education either through an association (BCAPA in BC) or study on your own. This is a wonderful profession, support each other in your quest to be as professional as possible. -Doug Thomson

All aromatherapists are encouraged to join and become active in a professional aromatherapy association. Support it and become active in the development of your profession. As well, professional aromatherapists are encouraged to become members of the BC Alliance of Aromatherapy. This is the body that is working to ensure that Ottawa and Victoria recognizes and respects our profession.
